Chak de.....

"Chak de India" broaches a subject which seems quite unusual.
In a cricket crazy nation, a film on Hockey, and that too womens'
would hardly be expected to do well.

But it does. And the reasons are not hard to fathom. A tight script,
good performances from the cast and of course, the King Khan in
his elements power the movie forward. Thumbs up to Shimit Amin
for coming up with a worthy effort.

At another level, the hockey team is a microcosm of India itself,
a diverse and heterogenous lot of people. In the end, the team wins
after burying their differences and pursuing a common goal.
At the 60th anniversary of our independance, we would do well
to ponder on some of the questions the film raises.

PS: Here is the link to an interview with Mir Ranjan Negi, former
Indian goal keeper, on whose life the movie is based. It is really
saddening to read about the trials these guys have to go through.
