Indian classical music
Can you appreciate it more if you know its nuances and intricacies ?
You can't make out the raaga from the vocals/instruments being played. But, I feel that this doesn't, in any way, reduce the sheer joy of listening to that music.
Right now, listening to Kishori Amonkar's Hansadhwani-Drut. It is a nice composition. Thanks to TMWW for that collection.

I think we can better appreciate if we know the intricacies. But I am on the same side of the river. So it is just a guess.
U r right! To appreciate the finer points of music, u should know the basics, but if u dont know, it can't stop u from enjoying music. I myself don't know what swaras r used in Raag Malkauns, but I simply love Classical music! In my blog I posted the entire story of how I got 2 liking classic music. I can identify the major raagas at least, by associating them with Old classical based hindi film songs! E.g. I identify Raag Malkauns with Rafi's (ur favouriten singer) "Man Tarapat hari darasan ko aaj" from Baiju Baawra, Raag Lalit with Rafi's "Ek shaenshah ne banwa ke haseen tajmahal" from Leader, Raag Sindhu Bhairavi with Manna Dey's "Laaga chunari mein daag" etc. This approach was shown 2 me by my Mausa, Mr.Naryan.Pandit, a noted violinist himself, who has learnt from Pt.Kumar.Gandharwa.
From ur description u appear 2 b a Puneite. I have spent 20 most beautiful years of my life in Pune. My dad served in the army and was posted there for 20 years. Every year, without fail, from 1980 - 1999, all of us in the family used 2 attend the Sawai Gandharwa music festival held in December every year.
My favourites r Pt.Bhimsen.Joshi, Pt.Kumar.Gandharwa, Pt.Jasraj, Begum.Parveen.Sultana, Vidushi.Kishori.Amonkar and Vid.Veena.Sahasrabuddhe.
If u r a recent convert 2 classical, don't b discouraged by the technicalities. Even "Bharleli kaarle" tastes bitter at first! Then the taste grows on you and u really begin 2 like it ! Same's with classical. If u enjoy listening 2 old film songs, try listening more 2 classical based songs and if possible try 2 collect info' about its raag on which it is based. Later u can associate the song with the pure Raag. Hope I have not become too didactic, after all I am a teacher(In a Dental College), and OLD HABITS DIE HARD !!!

Thats right. I too am not much aware of the nuances in Hindustani Classical Music but it always gives me immense pleasure to listen to them..
But then, picture this..
Shobha Gurtu singing "maajhiyaa priyaalaa preet kaLenaa" or Kumar Gandharva singing "ud jaayega hans akela" or Mehdi Hasan singing "ranjishein hi sahi" they give so much pleasure to us..
And then, isnt it enough to enjoy the way Ghulam Ali says "tumhaare hont thartharaanaa yaad hai" in chupke chupke raat din aansu bahaanaa yaad hai
man it makes me happy.. :)
